Google AI Mode and AI Overviews often give the same answers. But a large study shows they work in very different ways.
Many marketers think AI Mode is just a longer version of AI Overviews. This study checks if that is true and what it means for SEO and brand visibility.
Researchers studied over 730,000 AI answers from Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. They found that both tools usually agree on the meaning of the answer, but they use very different words and sources.
Only about 14% of the cited links were the same. Word overlap was also low, just 16%. Still, the meaning matched in about 86% of cases. This shows the systems reach similar conclusions through different paths.
AI Mode answers are much longer and mention more brands and people. AI Overviews are shorter and more selective. This means brands can show up in one but not the other.
